BESS has technical advantages such as flexible application, small conversion loss, fast response speed, high adjustment accuracy, and is not restricted by geographical conditions. It is suitable for batch production and large-scale, multi-field applications. More importantly, the cost of various types of battery energy storage is expected to further drop by 50% to 60%. Therefore, according to the forecast of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the global BESS scale will rapidly increase to 175GW by 2030.
According to CNESA's predictions, the scale of China's battery energy storage market will continue to increase from 2020 to 2024, and the compound annual growth rate will remain between 55% and 65%. By 2024, the installed capacity of the battery energy storage market will exceed 15GW~ 24GW.
However, there is still a large imbalance in the regional distribution of battery energy storage projects. Although in 2019, the world's newly put into operation battery energy storage
projects were distributed in 49 countries or regions, the top ten countries represented by China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia accounted for the total scale of 2019 91.6% of the world’s total new growth.
Among them, the scale of battery energy storage projects in China and the United States has exceeded 500MW, especially in China, which jumped from fifth place in 2017 and second place in 2018 to first place in 2019. South Korea, which ranked third in 2017 and first in 2018, saw its new battery energy storage projects stagnant in 2019 due to safety incidents.
