YINTU ENERGY STORAGE KNOWLEDGE

From equipment specifications to a working storage solution

A hybrid inverter and a battery PCS both handle power conversion, but they do not always offer the same connections or operating functions. For a commercial or industrial site, the right choice starts with the existing solar installation, the grid connection and the intended storage service.

What does a battery PCS do?

A power conversion system (PCS) controls the exchange of energy between a battery’s DC side and an AC electrical system. It converts AC into DC when charging and DC into AC when discharging. Depending on its design and settings, it may also control reactive power and support specified grid functions.

The PCS works with the battery management system (BMS), which provides battery status and operating limits. A site energy management system (EMS) or plant controller coordinates the PCS with loads, solar generation and grid restrictions. A conventional battery PCS does not automatically include photovoltaic MPPT inputs; direct connection of PV strings requires an explicitly supported architecture.

What does a hybrid inverter add?

A PV-storage hybrid inverter commonly integrates solar conversion, battery charging and AC conversion in one coordinated platform. A suitable model can accept PV strings through its specified MPPT inputs and manage energy between solar, the battery and AC loads. The precise ports, voltage ranges and operating modes vary by product.

“Hybrid” does not establish that generator input, three-phase operation, uninterrupted backup or grid export is included. Nor does the sum of PV input power and battery discharge power necessarily equal the available AC output. Check the converter rating, shared power paths and simultaneous-operation limits.

Selection point Hybrid PV-storage inverter Battery PCS architecture
PV connection Direct PV input only where specified; check MPPT voltage, current and string limits. Usually works alongside a separate PV inverter; DC coupling needs compatible DC conversion and controls.
Existing solar retrofit May require changing PV wiring or replacing equipment. AC coupling can retain an existing PV inverter when the interface and controls are compatible.
Equipment arrangement Can consolidate several conversion functions. Allows battery conversion and PV conversion to be selected separately.
Backup and island operation Model-specific; external switching and protection may still be required. Needs a suitable PCS, islanding arrangement and coordinated generation control.
Expansion Constrained by supported batteries, MPPT capacity and parallel operation. Constrained by the AC connection, DC compatibility, communications and project control design.

Two common C&I project starting points

1. Add storage to an operating factory solar system

If rooftop solar is already operating satisfactorily, an AC-coupled battery can be a practical starting point. The PV inverter and battery PCS connect through their respective protection to the site AC network. A meter at the point of common coupling gives the EMS the information needed to coordinate import, export and battery dispatch.

For an equipment example, review the 125 kW / 261 kWh liquid-cooled commercial storage cabinet. Its published scope integrates the battery and PCS; direct PV MPPT input is not specified. Solar integration therefore needs the appropriate external PV inverter and project interfaces. This example illustrates an architecture choice, rather than a universal cabinet count or savings result.

2. Plan solar and storage together for a new site

For a new installation, direct PV integration may reduce some conversion interfaces and simplify coordinated operation. The 1 MW / 2089 kWh containerized hybrid ESS with direct PV input provides a different starting point for a larger solar-storage project. PV sizing, battery energy and AC power still need to match the actual site duty.

DC coupling is an engineered arrangement. It is not achieved simply by replacing an existing PV inverter with any battery PCS. Voltage windows, DC/DC equipment where required, isolation, earthing, protection and controller compatibility must all be checked.

Backup requires a complete operating sequence

A grid-connected storage system must respond correctly when the utility supply fails. Supplying an isolated load requires a defined island boundary, safe separation from the utility, a converter that can establish the local AC system, and protection that remains effective in island mode. Solar and generator controls must also work within that island.

Transfer time, black-start capability and motor-start performance are separate checks. A model that supports off-grid operation does not automatically provide seamless UPS performance for every load. Identify sensitive equipment, allowable interruption, inrush current and restart priorities before specifying backup.

Our guide to PCS PQ, V-f and VSG control modes explains why a control-mode label alone is insufficient to confirm the complete site function.

A useful specification checklist

  • Existing equipment: PV inverter models, single-line diagram, transformer rating and the permitted grid import/export limits.
  • Battery compatibility: the full DC voltage window, current limits, BMS communication, usable energy and end-of-life assumptions.
  • Solar interface: maximum open-circuit voltage at the lowest site temperature, MPPT operating range, input current and permitted DC oversizing.
  • AC performance: continuous active power, apparent power, reactive-power requirements, overload duration and temperature/altitude derating.
  • Operating objectives: self-consumption, demand control, time shifting, backup or a combination with an agreed priority.
  • Delivery boundary: switchgear, EMS, metering, transformer, installation, testing, local approvals and after-sales responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hybrid inverter always more efficient?

No single efficiency number answers that question. Compare the actual energy routes: PV to load, PV to battery, grid to battery and battery to load. Include auxiliary consumption and the operating profile. A shorter conversion path can help in one route while other routes or operating points produce a different result.

Can an AC-coupled system use solar during a blackout?

Only if the islanding design supports it. The battery converter, PV inverter, switching equipment and controls must be compatible and must limit generation when the island cannot absorb it. An ordinary grid-tied PV inverter cannot be assumed to continue operating during an outage.
