YINTU ENERGY STORAGE KNOWLEDGE

Off-grid describes an operating state. Grid-forming describes a control capability. A resilient project needs both the right equipment and a tested system design.

Two storage systems can both be advertised as “off-grid” and behave very differently when a factory motor starts or a generator disconnects. Likewise, a grid-forming PCS can be used while connected to the utility, provided that its controls and connection arrangements are approved for that operation. Buyers should describe the required operating sequence instead of treating the two terms as interchangeable product labels.

YINTU is an energy storage solution provider. We work with capable manufacturing partners to match equipment, operating requirements and project interfaces. Our role includes configuration selection, technical clarification and supply coordination; the local EPC, installer and other project partners undertake the engineering and services agreed in the project scope.

Off-grid: how the site is connected

An off-grid installation operates independently of the public electricity network. An islanded microgrid is a local network that has been separated from the utility, either permanently or through an approved switching sequence. It still needs a source that establishes the AC voltage and frequency. That source might be a generator, a suitable battery inverter, or coordinated equipment working together.

A conventional grid-following PCS can contribute power inside an island if another suitable source establishes the reference and the complete arrangement is supported. It cannot be assumed to energize an otherwise dead bus by itself. This distinction matters when an EPC specifies a battery addition to an existing diesel-led microgrid.

Grid-forming: how the inverter behaves

A grid-forming inverter controls an internal voltage waveform and can act as a voltage-and-frequency reference. Appropriate controls allow it to establish or support an AC bus within its operating envelope. Implementations include fixed V/F arrangements for a defined island, droop-based control and virtual synchronous machine approaches. Their practical capabilities differ, especially when several sources run in parallel.

The term does not mean the PCS has unlimited power or the fault-current characteristics of a rotating generator. Battery SOC, DC voltage, thermal conditions and inverter current limits remain decisive. In a grid-connected scheme, droop and other controls must coordinate with the existing network; the inverter does not simply force an arbitrary frequency onto the utility.

Question Off-grid / islanded operation Grid-forming capability
What does the term describe? The site’s operating state and electrical separation from the utility The inverter’s control behaviour and ability to establish or support an AC reference
Can a diesel generator be involved? Yes; it may provide the island reference Yes; parallel operation requires compatible controls and settings
Does the term guarantee black start? No; inspect the complete start sequence No; verify auxiliaries, energization limits and the tested restoration sequence
Does it guarantee uninterrupted transfer? No; switching and load tolerance determine the requirement No; control capability alone does not specify interruption at the load

Black start and transfer are separate requirements

Black start means energizing a de-energized network without relying on an already live external AC source. It requires sufficient DC energy and a way to start the BMS, PCS controls, cooling and other auxiliaries. The sequence must manage transformer inrush, cable charging, motor starts and the staged pickup of loads. The National Laboratory of the Rockies highlights resource testing and inverter current limits as practical restoration issues.

Transfer performance concerns what the connected load experiences during a source change. A quoted PCS control response is not automatically the interruption time at a machine’s terminals. Detection, breaker or static-switch operation, control transitions and load characteristics all matter. Specify the acceptable interruption and voltage dip, then verify them under agreed test conditions. Do not assume that every grid-forming system delivers a sub-20 ms or UPS-grade transfer.

Three project situations that need different designs

A factory with a few essential circuits

Create a defined critical-load bus and identify starting currents and acceptable downtime. Size the usable AC energy for the required duration and reserve. Evaluate the 125 kW / 261 kWh liquid-cooled C&I cabinet as an equipment option, while confirming its supported operating modes and the required site switching and protection.

A solar-diesel industrial microgrid

Define the anchor source and the sequence for generator start, load sharing and battery charging. Confirm how PV output is controlled at high SOC or low demand. The 1 MW / 2089 kWh containerized hybrid ESS provides a larger equipment platform with direct PV input; the final PCS control package and source coordination need project-specific confirmation.

A site connected to a weak utility network

Assess voltage and frequency conditions, fault levels and the proposed inverter interactions. A grid-forming option may be considered, but the utility’s connection requirements, system studies and validated equipment behaviour determine suitability.

Specify evidence, not only a feature name

  • An approved single-line diagram, earthing arrangement and isolation boundary for each operating state.
  • A mode-transition sequence identifying the source that establishes the AC bus at every step.
  • Load-step, motor-start, transformer-energization and overload tests at the required conditions.
  • Supported parallel operation, communication dependencies, synchronization and resynchronization limits.
  • SOC reserve, low-energy behaviour, load shedding and the strategy for restarting after a full shutdown.
  • The exact supplied firmware, control settings, compliance documentation and responsibilities for commissioning.

Avoid universal rules such as “all off-grid PCS need the same communication distance” or “grid-forming always needs two to three times the rated power.” Cable limits, overload margins and controller architecture are model- and project-specific. Primary droop sharing also does not by itself guarantee equal battery SOC; energy balancing needs a supported control strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Can grid-forming equipment run with the utility present?

Suitable implementations can support grid-connected operation as well as an island. Confirm the approved mode, tuning, protection and synchronization sequence for the selected PCS.

Is an off-grid-capable cabinet a complete microgrid?

It is one part of the system. Isolation, distribution, protection, source controls, load management and commissioning are also required. Agree these interfaces before procurement.

Plan your storage solution with YINTU

Tell YINTU whether the project needs permanent off-grid supply, intentional islanding or grid-connected support. Include critical-load and motor data, PV and generator details, the site diagram and the maximum acceptable interruption. We coordinate the equipment selection and technical clarification with manufacturing and local project partners.
